Like Flickr, Yahoo! Unites MyBlogLog With a Single Login

yahoo mybloglog login One less username / password combination to remember.

MyBlogLog users will soon be able to use their Yahoo! IDs for logging onto their MyBlogLog accounts. This integrations news comes just eight months after Yahoo! acquired MyBlogLog.

Robyn says that they will be merging all MyBlogLog accounts with their owner’s Yahoo! accounts later this week.

Contrast that with del.icio.us which became part of Yahoo! family in 2005 but is still a very separate product. Surprisingly, even after acquiring del.icio.us years ago, Yahoo! is still maintaining a clone service called Yahoo! MyWeb.

Countries Where Web 2.0 and Blogging Craze is Popular

Wondering which countries in the world have the largest number of people following the Web 2.0 and blogging phenomenon. We can get some good pointers indirectly by looking at the traffic of TechCrunch, CNET (for tech, Web 2.0) and ProBlogger (for Blogging).

People who enjoy the latest innovations in the world of web 2.0, tech start-ups and blogging are very likely to be following these sites.

Recently, this widely-read trio embedded the new maps.amung.us mapping widget that displays, in real time, their recent site traffic on a World Map. It was used only on one of their pages but still, it's a fairly good indicator of their traffic per country.

Here's a recent snapshot from each of their widgets suggesting the bulk of tech & blogging crazy users is concentrated in North America, Europe, Australia and South / South-East Asia. Russia, China and Africa are not active in these maps probably because these sites primarily cater to English speaking audiences.

Rafe Needleman adds: I have a love/hate relationship with widgets like whos.amung.us, Feedjit and MyBlogLog. Site managers who are thinking of adding these need to be aware that they can expose information about traffic and users to the general public.

Download Individual Installers for Windows Live Programs

Some people are not too happy with the new Windows Live Suite that packs every software under a single installer and suggests changing your browser homepage / default search engine at the time of installation.

If you also prefer to download standalone MSI installers for different Windows Live products separately rather than the common installer, here are the links for all WL software:

Disclaimer: I haven't tried running the standalone Windows Live installers myself. The above download links were found in the WindowsUpdate.log file that exists in the default Windows Installation folder. Use at your own risk.

Find Any Email in GMail With Simple Search Commands

While some GMail users download email locally to Outlook or Thunderbird and then use Windows desktop search to find emails, GMail itself offers some very powerful search capabilities. Let's explore the most useful Gmail search filters and their usage:

Q: I have hundreds of unread emails in my Gmail Inbox but not all of them show up on the main page. Can I bring up view in GMail containing only unread messages.
A: label:inbox is:unread

Q: My boss sent me a PDF document last month that I can no longer locate in the Inbox. Can you help me find it.
A: from:Name_Of_Boss filename:pdf after:2007/07/01 [yyyy/mm/dd]

Q: I received an email from Paypal support last week. I am not sure if I deleted the message, archived it or marked it as Spam.
A: from:Paypal in:anywhere

Q: I have dozens of unread email messages in the Inbox but I am in a hurry to check them all. Show me just the messages that are for me.
A: is:unread after:2007/09/03 to:your.email@address.com

Q: Ryan is a good friend who send me pretty interesting PowerPoint / Word files that often have inspirational quotes, beautiful natural landscapes and funny slide shows of Cats. I love it all but they take too much space.
A: from:Ryan has:attachment [Select all and then delete]

Q. I accidentally deleted an important email message from a colleague. My GMail trash is already overflowing. How do I retrieve that particular message.
A: label:trash Name_Of_Your_Colleague

Q: I use GMail to automatically backup my WordPress blog. The database backup are stored via email attachments as Zips. Since I am running short on GMail storage, I would like to delete all backups that are older than two weeks.
A: filename:.zip before:2007/08/15 wordpress

Q: While chatting over Google Talk, Veronica sent me a link to her Flickr pictures.
A: in:chat from:veronica flickr.com

Q: Show me all emails from my Boss that he marked Urgent or Important in the subject.
A: from:Boss_Name subject:(Urgent OR Important)

Q. I have two contacts in GMail with similar names - Peter King and Peter King Junior. Can I see emails the received from the former contact.
A: from:Peter King -Junior

Search Shortcuts: Instead of typing label:unread, you can simply type l:^u

Important: Unlike Google web search, GMail won't suggest search results that contain plurals or misspellings of your search query. For instance, a search for "computer" will only show email with that exact word - you won't see messages containing the word "computers".

CNN Breaking News E-Mail Alerts and Advertising Dollars

cnn news

[Click on the CNN Breaking News email alert screenshot for large preview]

Like Google News Alerts, CNN too offers an email alert service to help readers track news topics of their interest - they get an instant email each time a story is published on CNN that matches some pre-defined keywords.

But there's a small problem with the CNN implementation - the email message has no links where the subscriber can click to visit either the CNN homepage or the story page that's mentioned in the alert message.

If you're reading the email alert in GMail, you are likely to see an ad on the right that points to CNN.com. (see screenshot)

GMail users, who may be feeling a bit lazy to type the CNN URL in their web browsers, are extremely likely to take a shortcut - they'll click that convenient Google ad to visit the CNN website for reading the full story content online.

And for CNN, that's equivalent to wasting ad dollars. They are buying traffic through online ads which could have easily come to them for free had they put a simple link in their breaking news email alert messages.

Should You Enable Adsense Whitelist (Allowed Sites Option) ?

Google has recently introduced an Allowed Sites feature which can be accessed from the AdSense Setup tab of your AdSense dashboard.

Adsense publishers can now specify a Whitelist or website URLs where the Google Ads should be displayed. For instance, if you enabled Allowed Site only for abc.com and use your Adsense Publisher ID to display ads on xyz.com, the Google ads will still display though you won't generate any revenue from the clicks or impressions.

Google probably introduced this setting to prevent cases of Adsense Theft where someone takes your Adsense ID (google_ad_client) and uses it on another inappropriate site. This has happened with us as well when a porn website was displaying Google ads using our publisher ID - Google quickly sent a warning email but the matter was resolved in few hours.

Are you planning to turn on the Allowed Sites option? As an Adsense Publisher myself, I'll probably leave that untouched mainly because a part of traffic coming to this site originates from Google/Yahoo cache (when the main site is inaccessible), online translation services like Babelfish (for non-English visitors) and from proxy servers (where the site may be banned). And some social sites / web directories display external content inside frames.

With Adsense Whitelist in place, you miss an opportunity to monetize this indirect traffic though the visitors will still see Google ads on your web pages, advertisers will be charged by Google but the Adsense revenue won't be shared with you.

If you are really worried that other illegal sites are using your Adsense publisher ID, you can easily detect that using Adsense channels.

How to Find Email Addresses of People Who Plagiarize Content

Content plagiarism is a serious concern on the Internet. You spent an entire day writing that comprehensive review of the Nikon DSLR only to realize that an hour later, some lesser-known websites and blogs have reprinted your article word-by-word without giving you any credit.

To get your content removed from the another website, the first step (that works in 99% of the cases) is to send a friendly email to the owner of that site.

But sometimes finding the email address of the person, who ripped off your content, may be the toughest part. Here are some indirect tricks to help you locate email addresses of offenders.

Step 1. If the offending site is self hosted, you are very likely to find the email address of the website owner through the public whois database. I prefer DomJax for quick retrieval of website registry information.

If the website is self hosted but the whois information is private, try the following query on Google (replace xyz with the actual site address) xyz.com -inurl:xyz.com - This might show up some real email addresses for that domain.

Step 2. If the site is hosted on Blogger, WordPress or other blogging platforms, leave a comment in any of the blog posts. Most bloggers generally read and respond to user comments.

Step 3. Now the trickiest part - there's no "Contact Us" form on the website and there's place for you to write comments. Well, don't give up yet because you still have good options:

3(a). Use Technorati or Google Blog search to find other sites / blogs linking to that offending site. It's quite possible that the offender may be maintaining multiple websites that are cross-linked for maximum Google Juice. There are chances that contact information is available on one of his/her legit sites.

3(b). If the person is blogging under an alias (say "PeterCool008") - search for that term on Google. It's very likely that he has used the same alias when registering on other web forums and social networking websites.

See: Writing DMCA Complaint to Google

Never quit - I know it takes some effort to track down the plagiarists but that should not deter you from actively pursuing your case. Remember that search engines, including Google, still have issues figuring out the original source of web documents.

Download Blogs and Websites for Offline Reading

Offline Explorer, wget, WinHTTrack Copier and Teleport are popular software utilities (both free and commercial) that let you download web pages to your local hard drive - they'll mirror complete websites, image galleries and everything else when your computer is connected to the web.

But there are some issues with most of these offline browsers. How do you browse or search web pages once they are saved locally? How do you update the local information when the source data has changed? Can you transfer the web content from computer to your mobile phone or the USB pen drive?

Update: The software listed in this article is no longer available. However, there are other working options to  help you download blogs and websites for offline reading.

Enter Webaroo - a free offline browser cum search engine that is not-so-geek and should solve all the above problems.

Once you install Webaroo, you suggest a list of blogs, websites, videos, podcasts or any online content that you would like to browse offline. If you are too busy to make suggestions, you can install readymade Webaroo packs - popular websites arranged in categories.

Webaroo then creates an offline copy of the site that you can browse or search as if you are connected. Based on your settings, Webaroo periodically checks the original web pages for modification and if there are any, the software automatically updates the local cache.

The software also provides visual hints for outgoing hyperlinks that are already available in the local cache.

De-geek Yourself Before It Gets Too Late

nick bradbury

Nick Bradbury, a software developer extraordinaire (he wrote FeedDemon, HomeSite and TopStyle), very recently celebrated his 40th birthday [picture via FaceBook].

Nick has probably experienced tech life more than us. Today, he makes a very honest confession asking young geeks, bloggers, programmers and everyone else in the tech sector to de-geekify before it gets too late.

When I was working on HomeSite over a decade ago, I rarely left my desk.  If I wasn't coding, I was answering email or doing some other work-related task.  I hardly slept, ate far too much junk food, and traded my health for what I thought was a successful career as a software developer.

If that sounds familiar to you, do yourself a favor and stop living this way.  It's not worth it.  Eventually you'll look back and wish you would've spent more time getting out and meeting people (non-geeky people, that is), and you'll look down at your pizza-filled belly and wonder how you let yourself get so unhealthy. Don't Trade Your Life for Tech

Sriram adds - I'm in my early 20s and doing exactly what you were doing. You are the second person in this week to say the same thing. Definitely something for me to think about.

Ashley Cecil - Blogging as a Hobby and Profession

Ask any A-List blogger in the world for some tips on blogging and the first thing they'll say is "Write on topics that you are passionate about, topics on which can continue writing for years without getting bored.."

Meet Ashley Cecil - she is a talented painter at heart and as you would have guessed it, her blog - the Painting Activist - is all about her paintings.

ashley cecil Unlike most creative artists who spend big dollars for showcasing their portfolio online, Ashley has taken a very different approach - she has put her paintings on a simple WordPress blog and interestingly, that's also her business website.

Blog readers (or prospective customers) can see her paintings, read details like what inspired that painting, what idea does the canvas convey and in some cases, Ashley adds a time-lapse video of the painting. If someone likes to purchase a print, there's an easy link to PayPal with every painting.

Blog comments make it easy for clients to interact directly with the artist or read opinions left by other readers.

Ashley's blog could be an inspiration for thousands of artistic souls in this world who are very creative but need a break. If you have a story to tell and a product to sell, a blog, which is so easy to maintain, can do wonders.

Copy-Paste Text but Strip the Formatting and HTML Tags

It's a common problem. What you get from the clipboard is not what you want.

When you copy some text from a web page or a Word document to the clipboard and then paste that text inside an email message or another rich text editor, the formatting (font sizes, colors, images) stays intact.

For Microsoft Word and other Office programs, you can use the "Paste Special" command that will auto-convert the pasted content from rich text as plain text format.

See: Copy Command Line Output to Clipboard

Alternatively, you can copy the text to the clipboard and paste everything into Notepad. Select the content in Notepad and copy to clipboard again. In this process, all the document formatting and HTML tags will be remove the clipboard content will be in plain text.

You can also (optionally) remove all HTML tags from the clipboard text, which is excellent for copying and pasting things from the web, without getting all the extra markup.

Then there's Clipboard Fusion which automatically strips the text of all formatting as soon as you copy it to the clipboard. Everything that gets to clipboard after you hit Ctrl+C is converted to plain text.

A Microsoft Service for Sharing Useful or Artistic Office Documents

Upload Microsoft Office Documents

Microsoft today unveiled a new social website for Microsoft Office users where they can upload Word Documents, PowerPoint Presentations or Excel Spreadsheets.

Known as the Art of Office, this place is not another Scribd or eSnips - it's basically for people to share Office documents that may either be useful to others or have an element of art in them.

Official description is slightly unclear - Art of Office is a place for people to submit artistic and/or useful content made using Office applications (Word, Excel, or PowerPoint).

While the Office site is a creation of the Mac team at Microsoft Office, it accepts content created with either Windows or Mac Office programs. Any can download Office documents from Art of Office and use them in their own presentations / spreadsheets.

Increase Google Adsense Income with Simple Tweaks

As an experienced Adsense publisher, you know tons of Adsense Optimization tricks that will yeild maximum advertising revenue.

To quickly recap, you know by heart that wide rectangles perform better than banner formats, that Google Ad colors should blend with page background color, that section targeting serves more relevant ads, that border-less Ads convert best, that split testing helps you shortlist the best ad formats, that Google CSE is much better than Adsense for Search.. the list goes on and on.

But what’s the next step when you have experimented with all these Adsense tweaks but the CTRs and eCPM figures are stationary or aren’t moving north as you would like them to? Well, the simple solution is – some more optimization.

1. Turn Low Performing Units into Image Only Ads

Say you have a skyscraper in your sidebar or a leaderboard at the bottom of the page. It may exhibit a very poor CTR because it’s so out of sight and visitors often tend to miss the ad unit completely.

In that case, an alternative is to use Image Only Ads for that using – Image ads are generally CPM ads so you will generate revenue each time the ad makes an impression. Image ads are also effective in places where the visitors are Adsense publishers themselves and less likely to be interested in clicking your ads.

Use Google Adsense Sandbox to see image and Flash ads that are likely to appear on your web pages for visitors from different countries across the world.

2. Harness the Comments Section of Your Blog

When people read a blog, they’ll will first read / scan the main article and then they’ll jump to the comments section.

If they have a question or need more information about the product / service mentioned in the blog post, they’ll either leave a comment or will leave the site search for more resources.

That’s why an ad unit placed in the comment section would immensely help. The visitor is in a mood to search for extra information and the Adsense unit in the comments could have an ad for a product that might appeal to the visitor. The best place for place an ad unit their is immediately under the comment textarea box.

3. Don’t Use Adsense At All

Some Adsense publishers are shy of placing ads in prominent and visible locations on their site thinking that that ads might turn away visitors. So they will put ads in some corner hoping that visitors will still find them.

Think from the perspective of Adwords advertisers who are renting space on your blog with the hope of getting prospective customers. Why would they be willing to invest in your site (by buying ads) when they are not getting the expected returns. If you want advertisers to bid on your site, it is advisable that you place ads above the page fold else don’t use Adsene at all.

4. Sell Your Website to Adsense Advertisers using Channels

You can use Adsense channels to convince potential advertisers as to why they should advertise on your site.
When you create a custom channel in Adsense, edit the channel settings and allow Targeting. Then type a marketing pitch – tell your advertisers about your site, where the ads will appear and why should they advertise on your site. Believe me, this works.

5. When Nothing Works, Put One at the Top

Thanks to tabbed browsers like Firefox, IE or Opera – a horizontal ad unit placed at the top of your web page can perform quite well because visitors often notice the areas near the browser tabs.

Whether they are planning to exit your web page by pushing the close button of the current tab or cycling to another browser tab, chances are high that your ad near the tab bar will get noticed. See implementations at Statcounter and Digital Point forums.

6. Avoid Using Common Blog Words

As far as possible, do not use the common jargon like “feeds”, “RSS”, “blog”, “XML”, etc as that might result in RSS and blog related ads even when your website belongs to a different niche.

You can again use section targeting to suggest Adsense bots to ignore the blocks of text that have irrelevant words.

Walt Mossberg - Yahoo! Mail Better Than Google GMail or Hotmail

Not sure if everyone here will agree but Walt Mossberg of WSJ says that the new Yahoo! Mail is better than Google email and the new Windows Live Hotmail.

Walt favors Yahoo! over other web email programs because Yahoo! offers unlimited storage space, it lets you send SMS messages to cell phones, has a tabbed interface and lets you drag-n-drop email messages into mail folders just like Microsoft Outlook.

The new Yahoo! mail is no doubt a big improvement but the downside is that you have to pay an yearly fee of $20 to get your mail out of Yahoo! service - GMail POP3 access and Hotmail-Outlook Connector are free.

An Environment Friendly Font Saves Ink and Paper

If you regularly web pages (or Office Documents), you know how much paper (and toner ink) goes waste in printing those irrelevant portions that look good when viewed inside the browser but are completely useless when printed on paper.

Related: Which Fonts Save Printer Ink?

Greenprint has introduced a software and a font to tackle exactly this problem. The new font, known as EverGreen, is designed such that 20% more words can fit on each printed page while the text still remain readable.

The EverGreen font can be used for printing web pages or even Office documents which typically use the Arial, Times New Roman or Helvetica.

Next in line is the GreenPrint software, which is more like HP Smart Print add-on for IE, but automatic.

When you print a web page, GreenPrint software analyzes each page for waste material like URLs, sidebars, banner ad graphics, borders, logos, almost empty pages and so on. You can also decide what portions of the web page get printed. The software can either output to paper or to a PDF file.

GreenPrint software is a unique approach to tackle the growing problem but it costs around $35 and is more targeted for the corporate sector. If you are looking for a $0 solution, check these tips on reducing printings costs of Office documents and web pages.

New Version of Jing for Windows and Mac

jing screenshot screencasts TechSmith today introduced an improved version of Jing both for Mac and the Windows platform.

Jing [review] is a free software for capturing image screenshots as well as movies of software, also known as screencasts.

Think of Jing as a mix of SnagIt and Camtasia Studio  but TechSmith is not charging anything at the moment.

Here's a summary of new features introduced in Jing v1.2.6.

  • Links shared via MSN Messenger should no longer be blocked. Earlier MSN would block URL that had an .scr extension.
  • For users with more than one Screencast.com account, you can change which one Jing is logged into, via the Preferences in the More window.
  • Jing now shows progress bar during an upload, and uploads can be canceled. They can be restarted via the History window.
  • Jing is now usable with high DPI displays or with Windows "Large Fonts" enabled. [Windows Only]
